Nissan Titan XD
Importing a used Nissan Titan XD from the USA
The Nissan Titan XD is one of the more unusual full-size pickups to come out of America, sitting deliberately in the gap between a conventional half-ton truck and a full three-quarter-ton heavy-duty. If you want to import a used Nissan Titan XD from the USA, you are looking at a truck engineered to tow and haul harder than a standard half-ton while remaining easier to live with than a big HD. That in-between character, plus the diesel option offered in the early years, is exactly what makes it interesting to European buyers who want American pickup capability without stepping up to a full heavy-duty chassis.
USCar Trader is an independent broker for used US vehicles. We do not operate as a dealer, we take no margin on the vehicle itself, and we hold no manufacturer partnership. Our job is to locate a sound used Titan XD in the States, verify its history and condition, and manage shipping, customs and German approval so it arrives ready to register.

Model history and generations
The Titan XD launched for the 2016 model year as part of the second-generation Titan program, built on a fully boxed, heavier-duty frame than the standard half-ton Titan. It was Nissan's answer to buyers who found a half-ton too light but a full HD too much truck. The headline feature at launch was the 5.0-litre Cummins V8 turbo-diesel, a genuine talking point in a segment dominated by the Detroit brands. Nissan dropped the Cummins diesel after the 2019 model year, leaving the petrol V8 to carry the range. The Titan and Titan XD were then wound down, with Nissan ending North American production after the 2024 model year, so every Titan XD you import is a used truck from a defined production window.
Engines and drivetrain
Two engines define the Titan XD. From 2016 to 2019, the standout was the 5.0-litre Cummins V8 turbo-diesel, producing roughly 310 horsepower and around 555 lb-ft of torque, paired with a heavy-duty Aisin six-speed automatic. It is the engine most buyers seek out for towing, thanks to its strong low-end grunt. The alternative, and the only engine after the diesel was discontinued, is Nissan's 5.6-litre "Endurance" petrol V8, making about 390 horsepower and 394 lb-ft, driving through a seven-speed automatic in later trucks. Both are available with rear-wheel drive or a part-time four-wheel-drive system with low range, and the XD's beefier frame and axles are what separate it from the lighter standard Titan.
Which trim makes sense
Most Titan XDs are Crew Cab trucks, which is by far the most popular body in the US, though King Cab versions exist in the earlier years. Trim walk typically runs from the work-focused S, up through SV, the off-road PRO-4X, the comfort-oriented SL and the loaded Platinum Reserve. Higher trims add leather, heated and cooled seats, larger touchscreens and driver aids, while the PRO-4X brings off-road hardware such as Bilstein dampers, skid plates and an electronic locking rear differential.
Supply on the US market
The Titan XD sold in far smaller numbers than its Ford, RAM and GM rivals, which cuts both ways: choice is narrower, but the trucks that come up are often well looked after by owners who bought them deliberately. Diesel XDs from 2016 to 2019 are the most sought-after and command attention when they appear. Typical used examples span a broad mileage range, from lightly used Crew Cabs to higher-mileage work trucks, so condition and history matter more than model year alone. There is no shortage of clean, well-optioned examples if you are patient.
Who benefits from importing
The Titan XD makes sense for a buyer who wants serious towing and hauling ability, ideally with the Cummins diesel, but does not need a full heavy-duty truck's payload or ride firmness. It suits people pulling heavy trailers, horseboxes or boats, who value the distinctive Cummins engine and the truck's relative rarity on European roads. If you only need light-duty capability, the standard Titan or a mid-size pickup will be cheaper to import and run; if you want the headroom, the XD delivers.

Known weak points and maintenance
Anyone researching Nissan Titan XD reliability should separate the two engines. The 5.6-litre petrol V8 is generally robust, though it is thirsty and some owners report catalytic converter and timing-chain wear at higher miles. The 5.0 Cummins diesel is stout mechanically but has its own known issues: complaints about the emissions system (DEF and EGR), turbo actuator faults, and a handful of injector and NOx-sensor concerns. On any XD, check for rust on the frame and brake lines from salted roads, confirm the four-wheel-drive engages cleanly, and look for a documented service history, especially on diesels where fluid and filter intervals matter. A thorough pre-purchase inspection is worth the effort on this truck.
US and EU spec compared
US Titan XDs run US lighting (amber markers, no dedicated rear fog lamp), a miles-per-hour cluster and US emissions calibration. Diesel trucks use DEF (AdBlue), which is straightforward in Germany. The sheer width and length of a full-size US pickup is worth planning around for parking and narrow streets, and the diesel's emissions equipment must be shown to work correctly for German approval. None of this blocks import, but each item becomes part of the TÜV process.
The import process in detail
The route is consistent: select a suitable truck; run a VIN and origin check to confirm the assembly plant; pay via secure escrow so funds are only released against a verified vehicle; ship by ocean freight; clear EU customs on arrival; complete the TÜV inspection and, where required, an individual approval (Einzelabnahme); then register in Germany. USCar Trader manages each stage and keeps you updated throughout.
What customs clearance really costs
Key point: duty depends on the plant of build; only a VIN check secures the 0% rate. Import VAT of 19% applies regardless.
The Titan XD is listed with a neutral origin, so the import duty rate depends on where the specific truck was built. Titan XDs were assembled in Canton, Mississippi, so if the VIN and plant data prove genuine US assembly and the truck ships directly, it can qualify for the 0% EU import duty under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, in force since 1 July 2026. That origin still has to be documented; we never call an import duty-free or guaranteed. Separately, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) always applies and is calculated on its own, on top of any duty.
TÜV, modifications and registration
Typical approval work includes adding a rear fog lamp, adjusting headlights for right-hand traffic, addressing side-marker lighting, and confirming the speedometer reads in km/h. The odometer conversion and documentation, plus a check of the emissions equipment on diesel trucks, form part of the technical inspection before registration.
Check before you buy
Before you commit, confirm: the VIN and build plant for the customs question; a full Carfax or AutoCheck history with no accident, salvage or flood record; a clean (non-rebuilt) title; the condition of the frame and brake lines for rust; complete service history, especially on diesel trucks; that four-wheel drive and the transmission shift correctly; and, on diesels, that the DEF and EGR systems are healthy with no active warning lights.
Common questions
Should I import the Cummins diesel or the petrol V8 Titan XD?
The 5.0 Cummins diesel (2016-2019) offers stronger towing torque and is the more sought-after engine, but needs a healthy emissions system. The 5.6 petrol V8 is simpler but thirstier. Choose based on how much you tow.
Will a US-built Titan XD get 0% EU import duty?
If the VIN proves US assembly in Canton, Mississippi and the truck ships directly, it can qualify under the 2026 EU regulations. The origin must be documented; there is no guarantee and nothing is duty-free by default.
Does the 19% import VAT apply to a pickup?
Yes. The 19% German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer always applies on import and is calculated separately from any customs duty.
How much can a Titan XD tow?
Depending on configuration, roughly 11,000 to 12,000 pounds, which is why buyers step up from a standard half-ton to the XD's heavier frame and axles.
Are Titan XD parts available in Germany?
Nissan mechanical parts and the Cummins/Aisin components are broadly serviceable, though some US-specific trim can take longer to source. Budget for that with a rarer truck.
Is the Titan XD reliable?
The petrol V8 is generally durable; the Cummins diesel is strong but sensitive to emissions-system upkeep. Frame rust and service history are the main things to verify on any example.
How long does importing take?
Usually a couple of months from purchase to German registration, driven mainly by shipping schedules, customs clearance and the TÜV appointment.
